The beauty industry is having a golden era; cosmetic brands have become more innovative, inclusive, caring, and have adapted to new consumer behaviour. More products use sustainable ingredients that respect our planet and its people, and many brands are trying very hard to educate consumers to overcome misinformation.
As a cosmetic scientist, Dr Jose Martinez Santiago is captivated by how the beauty industry challenges science in fascinating ways; Can we make a shampoo without surfactants? Can we use oils to cleanse? Is it possible to dispense a moisturiser without packaging?
Due to the current competitive environment, each beauty brand being launched on the market needs to stand out and deliver distinctive benefits to the consumer. For this to happen, entrepreneurs need custom services aligned with their product and business model. Thus, The Formulation Studio was born. We aim to help you bring your product to the market and maximise their success!
Our Journey
Since The Formulation Studio was founded in 2019, we have helped several entrepreneurs and established companies to bring their dream products to the market. Over 30 personal care products have been successfully launched and some of them are now award-winning! We mostly focused on collaborating with indie brands, but have also provided formulation services to larger companies and cosmetic ingredient houses.
Dr. Jose Martinez Santiago
Dr Jose Martinez Santiago is the founder of The Formulation Studio. Jose has been in the industry for over 15 years, serving as cosmetics formulator for Ashland and other global companies. He had the privilege to work at the Center of Surfactants and Particulate Systems (CPaSS) at Columbia University in New York where he gained a PhD in emulsion science. Jose has authored multiple scientific papers and is an inventor of numerous patents, most related to cosmetics formulation. He is passionate about the cosmetics business and is a full member of the Society of Cosmetics Scientist (SCS) in the UK and the Society of Cosmetics Chemists (SCC) in the US.

Managing Director and Principal Formulator
He is the Principal Formulator at TFS and loves creativity as much as science. Jose has over 15 years of experience in cosmetics formulation and gained a PhD in Emulsion Science from Columbia University in the City of New York.

Alex Salt
Formulation Technologist
She’s joined us as a Junior Technologist and is responsible for product development and formulation. Alex studies MSc Cosmetic Science at the University of the Arts London and her passion for cosmetics has led her to work in the Cosmetic Science Industry .

Natalia Chovanakova
Formulation Technologist
Natalia joined The Formulation Studio as Formulation Technologist focusing on skin care product development. She is enrolled in the MSc Cosmetic Science at the University of the Arts in London and she is passionate about sustainability in cosmetics.
